Ben

I know that I should be grateful that Abigail picked up some lunch for the two of us on her way back from the photo shoot, but I can’t help the little bit of irritation tickling at the back of my mind.

Haley and I have been walking for more than two hours and Molly never made a peep, which blows my mind but I’m not complaining. I’m sure that every man on the street saw us go by on our walk and I can’t help the bit of pride that I feel over the fact that I was the one walking with her.

They were all jealous, I just know it.

The sandwiches that Abigail picked up smell amazing, but I’d told Haley that I’d be happy to grill out for the two of us when we got back from our walk. There’s no way that I’m going to tell Abigail that and I’m just glad that Haley didn’t mention it. She’s younger than me, that’s for sure, but much smarter than most women her age.

Molly is now strapped to Abigail’s chest, her little head bobbing as my wife moves around in the kitchen. It’s obvious that she’s determined to make this lunch as delicious as possible and I suck on my chocolate shake while watching her.

First she pulls out two plates and takes the food out of the greasy wrappers they’re in, plating them nicely and then putting them on the counter where I sit. She pours us each a glass of ice water and twists lemon in them before handing them over and eschewing the paper napkins that came with the food for some cloth ones.

When I first met Abigail she was incredibly environmentally friendly, but we started using more and more disposable products now that we have a baby. It’s nice, really, to feel like the two of us are getting back to being the people we were when we fell in love.

“So tell me about your shoot.” Abigail sits down next to me and I watch her as I take a big bite of my sandwich. It’s delicious and I have to fight to push the thought of a nice grilled steak out of my mind. “You look happy so I’m assuming that it went better than you thought that it would.”

“It was amazing.” Abigail beams at me and I listen to her talk. From time to time I have to lick some juice off of my fingers but she barely eats, she’s so animated.

“I know that maternity shoots are nowhere near the type of shoot that I used to do. I mean, this isn’t anything like traveling to Africa to capture the great migrations or going to Turkey for their festivals, but it felt really natural to be taking photos again, you know? I loved it.”

“I’m so glad.” I squeeze her thigh and she looks up at me, a huge smile on her face. “I’m really happy to see you this excited about something. I know that things haven’t been easy, but I feel like maybe we’re turning a corner.
